Meet Gary Pettinella, the heart and soul behind Retro Bar & Char. A native of Derby, Connecticut, Gary’s passion for food, community, and creating a welcoming atmosphere has deep roots.

Gary is not new to pizza or the hospitality business. He first learned the art of pizza making from his father, who owned the beloved Napolitano’s in the 1980s. It is a craft and tradition that runs in the family, and now, Gary is continuing that legacy with Retro Bar & Char—where pizza is more than just food; it is a connection to his past and a gift to the present.

Before opening Retro Bar & Char, Gary was the co-owner of Retro Grub and Pub in Derby for five years. During that time, he built a reputation for his commitment to the community, hosting fundraisers and supporting local organizations. While Retro Grub and Pub closed its doors in 2023, the memories and connections Gary made during those years continue to inspire his work today.

Gary’s dedication to helping others was especially evident through his support of Seymour Pink, a nonprofit organization focused on helping women battling breast cancer. This cause is deeply personal to Gary, as both his mother and aunt lost their lives to the disease.

Family is at the heart of everything Gary does, and that spirit carries through to Retro Bar & Char. His daughter Emily will join him as a business partner, ensuring this new chapter remains a family affair.
